Spectroscopic Technique Could Speed Up Microbial Detection

Researchers from Daugavpils University in Latvia established Raman spectroscopy as a potential universal express method of detecting and identifying microorganisms.

In a study published in the open-access BioRisk journal in November 2023, the team led by Aleksandrs Petjukevics explored how this spectroscopic technique could efficiently characterize Pseudomonas aeruginosa from a turtle's skin.

        P. aeruginosa, a bacterial strain commonly found in plants, soil, and water, is responsible for several human diseases, including pneumonia and meningitis. It may also inhabit the skin of both humans and animals without inducing illness.

Through the study, researchers discovered that Raman spectroscopy showed potential in speeding up the detection of microbes compared to standard microbiological research techniques, saying:

"Classical microbiological research techniques have several disadvantages: first of all, it is a rather lengthy process. The minimum period is 3-4 days, but many days and even weeks may pass before the isolated pathogen is accurately identified, and it uses expensive chemicals and resources."

With this spectroscopic technique, the entire process could be completed in a much shorter time, ranging from 5 to 30 minutes.

Raman spectroscopy, an advanced non-destructive chemical analysis technique, relies on the interaction between light and the chemical bonds present in a material. Its exceptional analytical and diagnostic sensitivity makes it a dependable and swift method for identifying P. aeruginosa.
